Centic Primer is the debut release from Exan, a new electronic music project from Alex Leonard, an Irish/Greek producer based in Berlin, Germany.
Alex started work on Centic Primer in December 2018, initially sketching out a collection of densely layered concepts. The goal was to create a selection of dark rhythmic pieces punctuated by short melodic or experimental interludes where the audio spectrum was packed full, and elements wrest the listener’s attention from each other. Alex has always had a fascination with the potential otherworldly nature of electronic music, weaving FM, granular, and wavetable synthesis into unique sounds. Nearly as important to him though is the desire to retain a human or organic feel to his compositions, adding many layers, often very subtle, which help to place these pieces in a quasi-natural space.
After the first intense month of creative work, he left the pieces alone for 6 months before returning to them with fresh ears and a more objective viewpoint. Over the next year work commenced on developing and expanding these concepts into fully realised compositions. New layers were added, often improvised on synths and drum machines from Soma Laboratories and Elektron, before detailed processing was applied. Additional background noise completed the spectrum through recordings of electromagnetic interference.
The album was mixed over the first 6 months of 2021 in Alex’s studio in Berlin before being delicately mastered by Stephan Matthieu at Schwebung Mastering in Bonn.
The end result is a highly-detailed and intricate album which carries the listener through diverse and ethereal landscapes and complex rhythms.
